I have particular interest and experience working with difference and diversity. I am interested in and understand how the experience of feeling 'different' and in a minority impact on emotional wellbeing.
You might feel 'different' and in a minority because of your nationality, race, class, religion, sexuality, physical health or disability.
I am particularly interested in how being non-neurotypical (having a learning difference such as Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD or High functioning Autism) can cause distress and confusion in a world that is geared towards the majority of people who are neurotypical.
I have worked over the years with people with a very wide range of problems. If you want to know more about this then please click on ‘Qualifications and Experience’.
How do I work with you?
I work with you to help you to resolve or cope better with difficulties in your life. You have the chance to talk confidentially in a safe and sympathetic environment. This can help you to become aware of and deal with issues that have been bothering you. It can help you make decisions about your life so you can decide how you want to move forward. It can help you become more aware of the skills and resources you already have.
I offer the time and space for you to become aware of and understand difficult life or childhood events that may have been causing you distress and affecting how you feel and behave now. These may be sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse, deaths and bereavements or other traumatic events such as experiencing illness or disability, adoption or fostering or being bullied that can make later life difficult. I work to help you discover how thoughts, beliefs, patterns of behaviour, and ways of coping developed in your past can cause pain and distress in the present. I work with you to help you change and let go of those things that you no longer find useful. I aim to help you become more aware of what is useful and what 'works' for you and to help you recognise and use the strengths and ways of coping that you already have.
You can use psychotherapy to explore and learn how to deal better with relationships. These may be with your family, your partner, your children, at work or with your friends or others. I aim to help you understand and learn how to communicate better and how to stand up for yourself. This can improve your relationships and make you feel more comfortable in them.
I have worked for many years in the NHS with people experiencing anxiety and depression including Post Natal Depression and panic attacks. I aim to help you discover the causes of your depression and to work towards making the emotional and practical changes that will help you move out of depression. I aim to help you discover what changes are right for you and to help you to make those changes. I do not analyse you or offer advice but aim to help you develop your own strengths and ways of coping.
I have much experience working with trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). You may be experiencing anxiety, panic, nightmares, flashbacks or excessive anger and unexplained physical symptoms which may be the result of past traumatic experiences. Sometimes these traumas are obvious when you have, for example experienced a car or other accident. However these symptoms can sometimes come from less obvious traumas such as childhood abuse, having been bullied, difficult childbirth or being present at frightening events. I aim to work with you to recover from and move on from these events at a pace that does not make you feel worse. An important part of my role is to work with you at a pace that suits you. You are in control of what you talk about and when.
We will normally arrange weekly appointments.

‘How many sessions will I need?’
This will depend on the issues that you want to bring. I am experienced in working both short term as well as long term . At our first appointment I will talk with you about the issues you want to bring, what you want from coming and we can agree an initial timescale. I will also be honest with you about whether I think working with me on the issues you present is likely to be helpful to you.
At our initial appointment, if you decide that you want to come back I usually suggest that we agree to work together for 6 appointments. We will then review how things have gone. For some people this is all they want or need in which case we would finish work. However, some people at the sixth appointment decide that they want to work for longer. In which case you can either specify a particular number of appointments or move into longer term work.
Short term work
Short term work can be helpful if you want to bring single or recent issues such as stress and anxiety and depression or life events like bereavement, redundancy or coping with illness. It can also be helpful for longer term problems as these can sometimes be helped with a few sessions or you can use appointments to learn how to cope better with ongoing problems.I will discuss with you at the first session if short term work may be helpful to you.
Long term work
Long term work is useful for longer term or deeper problems. It may be that you have never really felt happy and at ease. You may be aware that you have struggled for some time but not understand why. Long term work aims to help you understand why this should be and how to move on from this.
At our initial appointment I will discuss with you what may be useful for the issues you want to bring. I aim to work with you in the way that most suits you and the difficulties you bring rather than trying to fit you into one way of working. Because I am trained in more than one therapy I have a range of skills to do this.
You can call or e-mail me to talk about how my experience and training fits the issues you want to bring.
How much does it cost?
I charge £50 a for a 50 minute appointment. You can book an initial half hour appointment free or a reduced fee (£20) full appointment at which you can decide whether you would like to come again.
