How do I work with you?
I work with you to help you to resolve or cope better with difficulties in your life. You have the chance to talk confidentially in a safe and sympathetic environment. This can help you to become aware of and deal with issues that have been bothering you. It can help you make decisions about your life so you can decide how you want to move forward.
I offer the time and space for you to become aware of and explore difficult life or childhood events that may have been causing you distress and discomfort. These may be sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse, deaths and bereavements or other traumatic events such as experiencing illness or disability, adoption or fostering or being bullied that can make later life difficult. I work to help you discover how thoughts, beliefs, patterns of behaviour, and ways of coping developed in your past can cause pain and distress in the present. I work with you to help you change and let go of those things that you no longer find useful. I aim to help you become more aware of what is useful and what 'works' for you and to help you recognise and use the strengths and ways of coping that you already have.
You can use psychotherapy to explore and learn how to deal better with relationships. These may be with your family, your partner, your children, at work or with your friends or others. I aim to help you understand and learn how to communicate better and how to stand up for yourself. This can improve your relationships and make you feel more comfortable in them.
I have worked for many years in the NHS with people experiencing depression including Post Natal Depression. I aim to help you discover the causes of your depression and to work towards making the emotional and practical changes that will help you move out of depression. I aim to help you discover what changes are right for you and to help you to make those changes. I do not analyse you or offer advice but aim to help you develop your own strengths and ways of coping.
I have much experience working with trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. You may be experiencing anxiety, panic, nightmares, flashbacks or excessive anger and unexplained physical symptoms which may be the result of past traumatic experiences. Sometimes these traumas are obvious when you have, for example experienced a car or other accident. However these symptoms can sometimes come from less obvious traumas such as childhood abuse, having been bullied, difficult childbirth or being present at frightening events. I aim to work with you to recover from and move on from these events at a pace that does not make you feel worse. An important part of my role is to work with you at a pace that suits you. You are in control of what you talk about and when.
‘How many sessions will I need?’
This will depend on the issues that you want to bring. I am experienced in working both short term (4-8 sessions) as well as long term (for months or years). At our first session I will talk with you about the issues you want to bring, what you want from coming and we can agree an initial timescale.
Short term work
Short term work can be helpful if you want to bring single or recent issues such as stress and anxiety and depression or life events like bereavement, redundancy or coping with illness. It can also be helpful for longer term problems as these can sometimes be sorted out with a few sessions or you can use sessions to learn how to cope better with ongoing problems.
Long term work
Long term work is useful for longer term or deeper problems. It may be that you have never really felt happy and at ease. Long term work aims to help you understand why this should be and how to move on from this.
Long term work may also be needed to help you resolve longstanding depression or anxiety, difficult childhood issues or other deeper problems. It can also be useful if you suffer with a more severe mental illness or personality problem such as eating problems, addictions or chronic depression.
At our initial session I will discuss with you what may be useful for the issues you want to bring. I aim to work with you in the way that most suits you and the difficulties you bring rather than trying to fit you into one way of working. Because I am trained in more than one therapy I have a range of skills to do this.
Please call or e-mail me to discuss how my experience and training fits the issues you would like to bring.
How much does it cost?
I charge £40 a session which lasts an hour.
A free initial session
I offer a free initial half hour session in which we can discuss the issues you want to bring. You can ask me more about how I would work with you, my experience and qualifications and any other questions you may have. You can then decide whether you want to book more sessions.
